Whatever fictionalization Sudha Kongara has done to the real-life story of Captain Gopinath Iyengar, 'Soorarai Pottru' will only remain in the history books as a biopic. However, in the process, what she attempted is also a sly erasure of the anti-caste political history and what it stood against for, which is Brahmanism. Sudha textures the film with an anti-caste aesthetics while employing it on a Brahmin man's rags-to-riches tale. This is a serious misallocation because it takes the question of

This film is an example how melodrama serves as a great tool of audiences' attention. We see every situation is so exaggerated, but still you can’t help but get deeply emotional with the character. His loss becomes your loss, his victory becomes your victory. Only Indian cinema (good filmmakers) can pull this off... and do it so effectively. Surya was perfect in this role, he made me feel the intesity.

'Soorarai pottru' An inspiring tale of an agressive person based on a book 'simply fly'. Excellently written and directed by Sudha kongara. Suriya brings enough grit to his character and had given the finest performance in recent times. Aparna and the supporting actors are great too. Cinematography is excellent, music is soul of the film. Editing is good but could have been better. Another good thing about this film is it won't showcase the lead character as a flawless/god like personality which usually many do in Indian Biopics. Highly recommended!!
