But the film appears to lean on digital spectacle and familiar beats without finding a fresh emotional angle or a convincing sense of wonder.
The response around it points to a movie that is more distracting than transporting. The performances, especially in the villain role, seem to have become the center of attention for the wrong reasons, while the dwarves and supporting fantasy elements are treated in a way that feels oddly weightless.
