Seabiscuit is the kind of old-fashioned inspirational drama that knows exactly what it wants to be. Gary Ross stages the material with warmth and confidence, and the film’s period texture gives the story a lived-in, Depression-era melancholy that keeps the uplift from feeling empty. The racing scenes have real momentum, and the movie understands how to turn a horse into a national symbol without losing the human stakes around him.
It is also very much a sentimental studio picture, and that will be either the appeal or the drawback. The narration can feel over-explanatory, and the film occasionally stretches its material to fit a broad, crowd-pleasing shape. But the cast, cinematography, and score do a lot of heavy lifting, and the movie’s sincerity mostly lands.
If you’re in the mood for a rousing true story with strong craft and a classic Hollywood feel, it’s an easy recommendation. If you need sharper writing or a less polished emotional agenda, it may feel a bit too safe.

I liked the part where the horse dragged Tobey Maguire through the mud and then slammed him into a wall… I hate horses but this one can stay. Tobey Maguire, I’m coming for you. You can run, but you can’t hide. I’m highly skilled in the areas of dark arts and public humiliation, and you’re next. Get on the ground and bark like a seal for me, and maybe I will contain some of my wrath. Young Nick Jonas was cute! I didn’t care about the story though 😁

Seabiscuit is fine for what it is, a standard early 2000s drama made with mass appeal. For a movie that clocks in at almost two and a half hour and is just about a racehorse, Seabiscuit is surprisingly not boring and occasionally very compelling.
