Verdict

A sly, surprisingly tender crime dramedy with a strong central performance and an offbeat true-story hook. It blends cat-and-mouse suspense with character-driven humor and melancholy, making the absurd premise feel emotionally grounded.

Best for

  • fans of true-crime stories with a human center
  • viewers who like crime films that are funny but not goofy
  • audiences drawn to flawed, charismatic antiheroes
  • people who enjoy mid-budget adult dramas with a nostalgic 2000s feel

Skip if

  • you want a hard-edged thriller with constant tension
  • you dislike tonal shifts between comedy, romance, and crime
  • you prefer highly stylized or plot-twist-heavy capers
  • you’re not interested in stories about damaged men trying to outrun consequences

Overview

Roofman turns a wildly improbable true story into something warmer and sadder than its premise suggests. The film gets a lot of mileage out of the contrast between the absurdity of a man hiding inside a toy store and the very real loneliness, desperation, and self-delusion driving him forward.

Worth noting

Derek Cianfrance brings a patient, empathetic eye to a character who could easily have been played as a cartoon criminal. Instead, the movie leans into charm, regret, and the slow collapse of a double life, with enough suspense to keep the story moving and enough humor to keep it buoyant.

Bottom line

It is at its best when it lets the romance and the fugitive plot collide, creating a movie that feels both playful and tragic. The result is less a slick heist picture than a melancholy character study disguised as one, and that balance is what makes it memorable.
