Overview
This is the Pirates sequel that feels most like a detour: less ensemble chemistry, less visual bravado, and a story that moves like a checklist of quest beats. Rob Marshall keeps things polished and readable, but the movie rarely has the wild, baroque momentum that made the earlier films feel larger than life.
Worth noting
That said, it’s not a total wash. The mermaid sequence is the standout, Geoffrey Rush remains a reliable engine of mischief, and Penélope Cruz brings enough spark to keep the movie from sinking into routine. There’s a playful, almost game-like quality to the whole thing, as if you’re wandering through a bonus mission rather than a main campaign.
Bottom line
If you’re already invested in the franchise’s mythology, this is an easy enough watch. If you’re coming in hoping for the series at its most inventive, this one is more competent than thrilling.
