Curator Review

Verdict

A sharp, bruising Indian crime drama that uses a murder-investigation framework to expose class violence, media cynicism, police corruption, and the rot beneath respectable society. Season 1 is the essential run: tense, morally grim, and unusually ambitious. Season 2 continues the world-building with a different case and a more expansive political canvas, though the original season remains the stronger entry point.

Best for

  • Viewers who like dark, socially pointed crime thrillers
  • Fans of investigative stories with a strong sense of place
  • People who enjoy morally compromised protagonists and ensemble plotting
  • Audiences looking for prestige international TV with bite

Skip if

  • You want a light procedural or a clean whodunit
  • You prefer fast, uplifting storytelling with clear heroes
  • You are sensitive to graphic violence, corruption, and bleak subject matter
  • You dislike shows that prioritize atmosphere and social critique over comfort

Overview

Paatal Lok is one of the more striking Indian thrillers of the last decade: a hard-edged, politically aware crime drama that starts as an assassination-case procedural and steadily widens into a portrait of a society built on hierarchy, resentment, and exploitation. It has the grit of a noir, but its real strength is how it connects the case to larger systems without losing the momentum of the investigation.

Worth noting

Jaideep Ahlawat gives the series its bruised center, and the supporting cast helps make the world feel lived-in rather than schematic. The writing is at its best when it lets the mystery unravel through character and environment, not just plot twists. Season 1 is the standout and feels complete in itself, even though the show continues.

Bottom line

Season 2 broadens the canvas and keeps the show’s serious intent, but the first season is the one that made the series feel essential. If you like crime dramas that are angry, intelligent, and unafraid to be uncomfortable, this is well worth the time.
