Ocean’s Eight is less interested in outsmarting you than in letting a very polished crew glide through a fantasy version of the Met Gala. The appeal is obvious: Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett anchor the movie with cool, controlled energy, and the supporting ensemble gives it a breezy, conversational rhythm. It’s an easy film to like in the moment, especially if you enjoy watching talented people occupy expensive clothes and impossible spaces.
The movie’s biggest strength is its tone. It wants to be light, glamorous, and self-aware, and it mostly lands there. The heist mechanics are serviceable rather than ingenious, but the setting and the costume-world detail give the film an identity that keeps it from feeling generic. There’s also a pleasant undercurrent of female camaraderie, even when the script leans on familiar caper beats.
What holds it back is that the movie rarely builds real tension or surprise. Some supporting roles feel underused, and the comedy can be uneven, but the overall package remains watchable because the cast sells the fantasy. The most unrealistic part of this movie was when Awkwafina found Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid in the bathroom and neither of them were doing coke.
